Cannabinoids are extracted from the plant and diluted with a carrier oil (usually MCT coconut, hemp, sunflower etc). The resulting oil formulation is best absorbed when taken sublingually (under the tongue) where it is directly absorbed into the bloodstream. This method of onset can be variable due to the amount of time it is truly absorbed under the tongue vs in the intestines. Duration for oil can last 4-8 hours depending on the dose taken.
Oil products may come in a plastic, glass or a metal vial. Oil can be administered with a dropper, a medicine measuring cup, or syringe (no needle) which can be purchased from a pharmacy.
Crystals are highly refined and the purest form of CBD. Unlike other extracts, crystals are at least 99% pure meaning that there are no other substances present in the product. Crystal comes in a ground salt-like form in a small container, and differing from other product forms, doesn’t need to be stored in any particular way.
Crystals can be used orally, vapourised or compounded into other forms. A micro-scoop can be used (commonly 10mg) for dosing. Vapourisation and oral dosing are both titrated up to effect.
Compounding into vapouriser fluid, or into sublingual tinctures, or into topical ointments or lotions are just the beginning. Lipid and ethanol bases are commonly used.
With capsules, cannabinoids are extracted then contained within a capsule and ingested orally. The capsule is then broken down in the stomach where the cannabinoids are then metabolized by the liver and entered into the bloodstream. This causes the onset of the cannabinoids to be slowed, however, the duration can be prolonged from 4-12 hours via this method.
The soft gel capsules provide a dosage-controlled format that allows doctors and patients to facilitate a more precise administration; you know exactly how many milligrams of CBD you are taking each time. No spilling, no leaking, no “over-dosages”, easy to titrate and calculate dosages. Easy to take for people who don’t have a steady hand, have poor sight, or other difficulties dosing CBD oil from an oil dropper bottle
Dried cannabis flower, also known as floss, bud, herb, or weed, is ground up (milled) and then delivered through an inhalation method (vapourised is recommended). This results in the cannabinoids getting into the bloodstream quite quickly, and with a fast onset.
Peak THC levels in the bloodstream occur after approximately 10 mins, but people can feel the effects of onset within a few minutes. The duration of inhaled cannabis is usually 2-4 hours with peak effects immediately after onset with a gradual decrease in effects after that.
Flower products come in a plastic container in bud form which should be self milled or cut up prior to placing in a vapouriser.
Cannabinoids extracted from the plant are made into a lozenge form. Similarly to the sublingual dosing method of oils, lozenges are placed in one’s mouth and are meant to be sucked until the product has completely dissolved. Duration for lozenges can last anywhere from 4-12 hours.
